I open 1. It means at least 4 diamonds (exceptionally 3 diamonds). What do you bid in your bidding system with:
Kx
xx
xx
KJ10xxxx
What bidding system do you use?

Are we overcalling? or responding to partner?

2/1: 1N unless we've agreed weak jumps.
Acol: 2 followed by 3 is an alternative to 1N.

Sabine Auken plays 1D-2C as natural less than an invite type hand

1D-1H* as either natural 5+Hs or 'any invite type' hand.

She also plays 4 card majors and a 1C* forcing with canapé style bidding.

Welcome to the forum Tim Ocean :)

2/1 It's that ubiquitous 1NT response (uuurgh!) except if you have agreed 3 as 8-11 and 6+ carder
SAYC I'll bid 2 even though it should show 10+
Acol I'll bid 2 as it is 8+
Precision Club I can pass as I know partner has less than 16, but it doesn't make it right.

As the late Rixi Markus, a formidable British woman player, said "Bid what's in your hand". If you can't show that you have a 7 card suit with 3 of the 5 top honours and an outside king naturally the system that you are playing is a bit lopsided, in my opinion.

Note: some 2/1 players do not play 1 - 2 sequence as game forcing.

The opponents are quiet.

This type of hand should be en exception to the rule 10+ pts?

Acol seems to be a really natural bidding system.

SAYC 2 level responses over 1, as far as I am concerned, are not GF and show a minimum of 11 points with a 4 to 5 card suit, or 9+ with a 6 card suit.

I admit I'm not a fan of the 1NT response in 2/1 (as you probably realise), and SAYC is more conservative as a 1NT response shows a 6-9 count.

However, in SAYC, as there isn't a game force in place if you bid 2 then I believe it is better to tweak the system a little and bid it with a 7 card suit and 7 HCPs, that is, if you don't play 1 - 3 as showing this type of hand.

You've gotten some good answers regarding the most common systems. Some play that a 1D opening shows 4+ diamonds and an unbalanced hand (so either 5+ diamonds with 5422 or better shape, or 4441). In this style, some has reasoned that its okay to not being able to stop in 1NT, and thus they use the 1NT response as artificial. For instance:

1D-1NT = Game forcing, asks about shape and strength.
1D-2C = Non-forcing with 5+ clubs (would be a good choice with the posted hand).

Another treatment is to use 1D-1NT as a transfer to clubs.

If playing that 1D can be balanced, and even a three card suit, I think you need a natural non-forcing 1NT response though.
