Wondering if anyone could provide a summary of standard or common meaning of doubles and cue bids when the bid being doubled or cue’ed is artificial.

For example, doubles of artificial bids are often lead directing, but sometimes not. When is it lead directing versus other?

Another example, is there a difference between cue bidding a bid that was purely artificial (e.g., Precision 1 Club) versus one that shows specifics suit(s) (e.g., Jacoby transfer)?

They are normally lead directing at a higher level or once it is likely to be the opponents hand. At a lower level and when we haven't had a chance to bid to show what we have other meanings are more likely.

2nt pass 3♦(transfer to hearts) dbl. here for example we are unlikely to want to try to make our own contract so dbl is clearly lead directing of diamonds.


1♣(strong) dbl. here we might need to be able to show what we have most likely to enable partner to compete. It is most common for dbl to show majors.
